Build confident, repeatable grafting technique in a single day — working on fresh-tissue models alongside experienced oral surgeons and periodontists who explain every step as you go.

Training, a presentation and people

Service description

A one-day hands-on workshop covering the grafting procedures most relevant to general dentists who place or plan to place implants: socket preservation after extraction, ridge augmentation for deficient sites, and sinus floor elevation basics. The course uses a mix of synthetic and xenograft materials so participants understand the clinical rationale for each choice.

What this workshop covers

This one-day course is built around the grafting procedures that matter most to general dentists who place implants or want to prepare sites for them. You will work through socket preservation after extraction, ridge augmentation for deficient sites, and an introduction to sinus floor elevation — both the lateral window approach and the crestal technique.

The course also addresses graft material selection in depth, comparing autograft, xenograft, and alloplastic options so you understand not just how to place each material but why you would choose one over another in a given clinical situation. Evidence and practical rationale are woven into every session, not saved for a slide deck at the end.

Who this course is designed for

The workshop suits a range of experience levels. If you currently refer all implant-related surgery but want to begin performing socket preservation yourself, the first half of the course is directly applicable to your practice right now. You do not need prior implant placement experience to benefit from that portion of the training.

For dentists who are already placing implants and want to develop their grafting repertoire — particularly around ridge augmentation and sinus elevation — the full day builds on technique you already have. Both groups leave with skills they can apply in their own clinic the very next day.

How the day is structured

The morning begins with a focused discussion of graft material rationale and evidence, giving you the clinical framework you need before you touch a model. From there, the group moves into the simulation lab for hands-on socket preservation practice on fresh-tissue stations. The instructor works alongside each participant individually, not from the front of the room.

The afternoon moves into guided bone regeneration membrane placement and fixation, followed by a step-by-step demonstration of the lateral window sinus lift and bench practice time. The day closes with a practical session on post-operative care and complication avoidance, so you leave thinking not just about the procedure but about what comes after.

The learning environment at Garvey Oral Surgery

Every workshop at Garvey Oral Surgery is capped at eight participants. That limit is deliberate — it means the instructor can spend real time with each dentist, answer questions as they arise, and slow down whenever a step needs more attention. No one is rushed through a technique they are not yet comfortable with.

The facility in Red Deer includes a fully equipped surgical simulation lab, fresh-tissue dissection stations, and a dedicated implant planning suite. All graft materials used in the hands-on sessions are provided as part of the course fee, so you arrive ready to learn without needing to source or bring anything yourself.

CE credits and registration options

This workshop provides 8 CE credits, recognised by provincial dental associations across Canada. Three registration tiers are available: early registration, standard registration, and a reduced rate for alumni of the Implant Fundamentals or Advanced Masterclass courses. All prices are listed in Canadian dollars.

If you are unsure which tier applies to you, or if you have questions about whether your current experience level is a good fit for the course, the team is happy to talk it through before you commit. There is no pressure to register until you feel confident the course is right for where you are in your practice.

Continuing your development after the workshop

Completing a hands-on course is the beginning of a skill, not the end of learning. Many dentists find that the first few cases in their own clinic raise new questions — about treatment planning, about when to refer, about how to document and debrief their own work. That transition from course to clinic is exactly where our Practice Integration Coaching program is designed to help.

Alumni of this workshop are eligible for a reduced rate on the three-session coaching program, which provides one-on-one video support as you begin offering grafting services in your practice. It is an optional next step, available whenever you feel ready for it.
