Periodontal Surgery Certificate Program

Build a confident, well-rounded periodontal surgical skill set over four months — one focused day at a time, with direct instructor guidance and real case discussion woven in throughout.

Training and a meeting

Service description

A structured four-module program spread over four months, designed for dentists who want to offer a meaningful range of periodontal surgical services in-house. Each module is one full day and builds on the previous one. Participants are encouraged to attempt supervised cases in their own practice between modules and bring those cases back for group discussion. The program concludes with a certificate of completion.

Who this program is for

This program is designed for general dentists who want to bring a meaningful range of periodontal surgical services into their own practice rather than referring every case out. You do not need prior surgical experience to begin — Module 1 starts from foundational principles and every step is explained before you attempt it.

It is also a good fit for dentists who have dabbled in periodontal procedures but feel they are working without a complete framework. The four-module sequence gives you that framework, building each skill on the one before it so nothing feels isolated or rushed.

How the program is structured

The program runs across four months, with one full-day module each month. Module 1 covers osseous resective surgery and flap design. Module 2 moves into connective tissue and free gingival grafting. Module 3 addresses guided tissue regeneration and bone grafting, and Module 4 focuses on crown lengthening and aesthetic soft-tissue procedures.

Between each module, participants join a 45-minute case review call where you can bring questions or early cases from your own practice. These calls keep the learning continuous rather than letting momentum drop between workshop days.

Hands-on learning in a small group

Every workshop is capped at eight participants, which means you spend real time at the bench rather than watching from the back of a room. The surgical simulation lab and fresh-tissue dissection stations at our Red Deer facility are set up so each participant works through every technique themselves, with an instructor close enough to observe and correct in real time.

If you are not comfortable with a step, you repeat it. There is no pressure to move on before you are ready. The instructors — all experienced oral surgeons and periodontists — treat the day as a mentorship session, not a performance.

Practising between modules

One of the features that separates this program from a single-day course is the expectation that you attempt supervised cases in your own practice between modules. This is encouraged, not required, but most participants find it transforms what they learn in the workshop into something they can actually rely on clinically.

When you bring those cases back to the group review call, the discussion is practical and specific to your situation. You are not just hearing theory — you are working through your own patients with guidance from instructors who have seen the same challenges many times.

What you receive on completion

Participants who complete all four modules receive a certificate of completion issued by Garvey Oral Surgery, documenting 32 continuing education hours. This is not a specialty designation, but it is a record of structured, hands-on training that many dentists include in their professional portfolio when communicating their scope of practice to patients or colleagues.

If you miss a module during your cohort, you can attend the equivalent module in the next cohort at no additional charge, provided you complete the program within 12 months of your start date. Individual modules are also available separately for dentists who want to focus on a specific area.

Preparing for your first module

No special preparation is required before Module 1 beyond a willingness to work with your hands and ask questions. Reviewing basic periodontal anatomy beforehand is helpful but not a prerequisite — the instructor will walk through the relevant anatomy as part of the day.

Wear comfortable clothes you do not mind getting clinical in, and plan to stay for the full day. Lunch is a natural break, but the afternoon session often runs into genuinely absorbing territory and participants rarely want to leave early. Come with cases in mind, even if they are just referrals you have been sending out — those are exactly the conversations worth having.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take individual modules without committing to the full program?

Yes. Each module is available individually. However, the modules are sequenced so that Module 2 and beyond build on skills from the previous one. We recommend attending in order if you are new to periodontal surgery.

Is the certificate recognized by dental associations?

The certificate of completion is issued by Garvey Oral Surgery and documents 32 CE hours. It is not a specialty designation, but it demonstrates structured, hands-on training that many dentists include in their professional portfolio.

What happens if I miss a module?

We run each program cohort twice per year. If you miss a module, you can attend the same module in the next cohort at no additional charge, provided you complete the program within 12 months of your start date.
